How do I check out a book?
Take your book to the circulation desk in the Library. We have all student library cards arranged in alphabetical order. Tell the person at the desk your teacher's name, your last name (spell it, please), and your first name. Your name will appear on the computer screen. Hand them your book. They will wand the barcode on the back of the book and the title of the book will appear on the screen and the date on which the book is due. Third graders may have out three books at one time; fourth graders, four; and fifth graders, five.
What if my book is late?
You will receive an overdue notice each week until the book is returned. We do not charge fines for overdue books, but if you have any overdue book(s), you may not borrow any new books until the overdue item is returned. You may renew the book if no one else has put it on hold. Remember when you use the library, you are sharing books with all the other students in the school. A thoughtful student returns books on time so that other students may read them too.
How can I renew a book?
If you are not finished with your book after the initial 3-week loan period, bring the book to the circulation desk and ask to have it renewed. You may renew it for 2 weeks, and you may renew a book twice (a total of seven weeks). If someone else has reserved that book, you may not renew it but you can place it on hold.
How can I hold a book?
If someone else has checked out the book you want, you may place a "hold" on it. Fill out a hold slip located at the circulation desk. Place the completed form in the black box at the circulation desk or turn it in to a library employee/volunteer. When it is your turn to have the book, you will receive a notice from us that says "Come and Get It!" Please come promptly to pick up your book. We will hold it for you for five school days. If you do not pick it up during that time, we put the book back on the shelf or give it to the next person on the holds list.
What if my book is lost or damaged?
Tell the librarian and they will send you a bill for the book. You may pay by check made out to Brighton Central Schools. The money will be used to buy a replacement. You also have the option of replacing the lost book with a book of the same type (e.g. hardcover for a hardcover, paperback for paperback).
How many students may a teacher send to the library?
Students should come to the library with a pass and a purpose. Teachers may send up to five students at a time to work in the library or exchange books, and these students should have a pass which indicates the time they should return to their classroom.
