Art Department

Art is an essential element within the school and plays a primary role in the total development of the individual. The act of creating art enables one to use his mind in concert with his eyes and hands to develop sensory awareness, perception, and motor skills. Art also provides a foundation for integrating experiences leading to the discovery of new ways of working, understanding and observing the world. This discovery helps develop a commitment to lifetime learning.

The Brighton Central School District recognizes the uniqueness of each student and provides appropriate instruction to develop one’s artistic ability to the fullest capacity. Through active exploration in a wide variety of visual arts experiences students are guided toward making, valuing, understanding and criticizing art. The art department works on a spiraling curriculum where each year is built on what has been previously learned. Each month all of the art teachers meet to discuss and plan the curriculum.

At French Road, the goal of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade art education is to help students develop an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design. Students learn to effectively use a variety of media and tools, and develop a greater appreciation of art history. Each year the students are introduced to new media, techniques, vocabulary and artist. Each project is designed to encourage the students to use their imagination and creativity to express themselves. Children are natural artists and love to create and recreate their visual world.
